PRC-PALM-SPC-5.51-pro1-prs2: REQUEST FOR PHLEBOTOMY DRAW FROM LOWER EXTREMITY VEINS PROCESS
Blood specimens shall only be obtained via venipuncture from upper extremity veins.
In certain instances patients may request phlebotomy from lower extremities. This is not routinely performed and requires a physician’s order on an adult patient.
Blood specimens shall not be drawn from the side of the body where an A.V. shunt, vascular graft, cannula, fistula, or a mastectomy has been performed without a physician order.
With a difficult draw the health care member shall not attempt more than twice without seeking assistance.
HFML sites will not draw lower extremities or from feet but direct the patient to a Henry Ford Hospital Phlebotomy.
