PRC-PALM-SPC-5.51-pro3-frm2: INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPUTUM COLLECTION


SPUTUM:
Culture
  1. It is best to collect sputum early in the morning.
    If (3) AFB cultures are requested, it is best to collect one sample each morning for three days.
    If Respiratory culture, Fungus, and AFBx3 – collect minimum 4 samples)
  2. Rinse your mouth with water.
  3. Cough deeply from the diaphragm and expectorate all sputum into the container.
  4. Specimen should be a thick mucus (not saliva).
  5. Screw cap on tightly being careful not to touch the inside of the container or lid.
  6. Label specimen with Full Name, Date of Birth or MRN, Date and time of collection.
  7. Specimen should be delivered to Henry Ford Outpatient Laboratory as soon as possible after collection.

Storage and transportation requirements: Laboratory staff - Please check off storage requirement:

: Room temperature >24 hours refrigerate

NOTE: Remember to bring written laboratory orders with your specimen in order to properly process your tests.
