Ordering Test Procedures For Microbiology

The order must state specimen description and source.  Specimen description indicates the kind of specimen; e.g., abscess, CSF, wound, urine, etc.  Source indicates the part of the body or method of collection.  Corresponding examples of sources for the above mentioned specimen types are lung, ventricular, left leg, and clean catch midstream.  Requests for isolations of specific pathogens should be noted with the order; e.g., Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Vibrio sp., Brucella sp., Leptospira, etc.

Microbiology Transportation Time Limits

Test results of delayed specimens may be erroneous; therefore, specimens delayed in transport may be rejected if the laboratory staff believes results would be compromised.
