The order must state specimen description and source.
Specimen description indicates the kind of specimen; e.g., abscess, CSF, wound,
urine, etc. Source indicates the part of the body or method of collection.
Corresponding examples of sources for the above mentioned specimen types are
lung, ventricular, left leg, and clean catch midstream. Requests for
isolations of specific pathogens should be noted with the order; e.g., Corynebacterium
diphtheriae, Vibrio sp., Brucella sp., Leptospira,
etc.

Test results of delayed specimens may be erroneous; therefore,
specimens delayed in transport may be rejected if the laboratory staff believes
results would be compromised.
