Internal Henry Ford Hospital Kidney Biopsy collections:
The radiology or nephrology departments will contact pathology (313-916-2317) when a medical kidney biopsy is on the day's schedule.
An 18 gauge biopsy needle should be used for medical kidney biopsies.
The designated pathologist, pathology resident, or medical technician will be notified when to proceed to the collection site with the Arkana collection kit and collection tray.
Preferably, collect at least three needle core biopsies that contain renal cortex. Using bedside microscopic examination, divide the tissue into adequate amounts of renal cortex for each of the two containers, formalin and Michel's media.
Return to surgical pathology for accessioning and mainling the samples to Nephropathology Arkana Laboratories.

Complete the Kidny Biopsy Request Form being sure to include patients past medical history and reason for biopsy procedure. Include copies of any pertinent patient information.

Return collection bottles to the plastic specimen bag and place the sealed bag back into the kidney collection tube along with the completed request forms.
The specimen much be delivered the same day as collection by courier or cab to arrive at Henry Ford Pathology Laboratory by 4:00pm in order to make the last FedEx pick-up for Arkana Laboratories.
Notify Histology Accessioning/Transcript at 313-916-2319 when a specimen is being sent.
Transplant Kidney Biopsies
Transplant kidney biopsies may not require tissue for electron microscopy or immunofluorescence unless specifically specified by the ordering physician.
