Instructions for Handling Microbiology Specimens


  • Do not send specimens to the laboratory for requests not listed in this guide without first consulting the laboratory. 
  • Follow standard precautions for specimen collection and transportation. 
  • Label all hazardous specimens according to Infection Control guidelines and place them into sealed plastic biohazard bags with any laboratory forms placed in the outside pocket. 
  • Do not use staples since they present a hazard. 
  • Ensure that all specimen containers are securely closed.  Specimens that are improperly collected or leaking should not be sent to the laboratory for processing and may be rejected. 
  • Each specimen container should be labeled with the patient's full name, medical record number, date and time of collections, and specimen description.
