eSwab, Single Swab, Multiple Uses - Gram stain, Aerobic and Anaerobic cultures

** eSwab is acceptable for Gram stain and the following cultures:
- Aerobic/Wound
- Anaerobe
- Ear/Eye
- Fungus (Mycology)
- Group B
- MRSA
- Small tissue specimens-Small tissue specimens for culture can be placed into swab tube after discarding the swab.
- Larger specimens should be sent in sterile containers.
DO NOT send tissue samples for Histology/Anatomic Pathology in eSwab
Sterile fluid specimens- Do Not submit in eSwab. Process as per current protocol.
Mycobacterial culture- Swabs are not acceptable due to poor culture sensitivity. Please submit tissue, fluid, aspirates or pus in a sterile container for mycobacterial culture.
**Tissue/ fluid/ pus/ drainage/ scrapings are still the preferred specimen over swabs for optimal culture sensitivity.
eSwab is not acceptable for the following tests. Please see appropriate collection devices below:
